Standing here today as a representative of all trainees fills me with deep honour and emotion. As we gather to close this transformative training programme, we realise that this is not simply an ending—it is a beginning of something bigger than all of us.
When we first arrived in China, many of us were nervous, excited, and unsure of what to expect. But almost immediately, we discovered something extraordinary. We were welcomed not as visitors, but as friends, and later as colleagues. What began as training quickly became a journey of shared humanity.
Allow me to share a short reflection.
On our first week in the wards, one of our colleagues whispered to me, “These children look just like our children back home… the same eyes, the same laughter, and the same fear when they are unwell.” In that moment, we understood something powerful: the health of a child is a universal language—one that unites us across cultures, continents, and systems.
We came here to learn medical skills, but we leave with something far deeper. We leave with the reminder that every child, everywhere, deserves the best chance at life.
To the kind-hearted representatives of the Hunan Provincial Department of Commerce, thank you for your unwavering support and for fostering international cooperation. Because of your efforts, the knowledge we gained here will touch countless young lives in our countries.
To the leadership and staff of Hunan Children’s Hospital, thank you for opening the doors of this extraordinary institution to us. We saw a level of dedication, organisation, and compassion that both impressed us and inspired us. During our rotations, many of us said, “If only our children back home could one day experience this level of care.” You showed us what is possible—and what we can aspire to.
To the doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals who guided us each day: thank you for teaching us not only how to treat, but why we treat. We will remember the consultants who stayed an extra hour to explain paediatric care, the nurses who smiled even in the busiest moments, and the countless staff who asked, “Do you understand? Do you need help?” These small acts of kindness shaped our learning more than words can say.
To my fellow trainees—what a journey this has been. We arrived as individuals from different regions, backgrounds, and hospitals. But today, we stand united as a family with a shared mission: to save children’s lives. We laughed together, supported one another, and sometimes even navigated the challenges of a new country side by side. These memories will stay with us forever.
As we prepare to return home, we carry home more than skills.
We carry new confidence to improve our hospitals.
We carry fresh ideas to strengthen our communities.
Most importantly, we carry a responsibility: to ensure that the knowledge we’ve gained reaches every child who needs it—from the busiest urban clinics to the most remote rural villages.
To the Government of China and all our hosts in Hunan, we extend our deepest gratitude. This investment in our growth is a gift to our nations’ children—a gift that will echo in paediatric wards across Tanzania and beyond.
Though we may be leaving China, a part of our hearts will always remain here. The lessons we’ve learned will guide us as we work tirelessly to build a healthier future for all.
Thank you, from the depths of our hearts.
